Increased divergence between consumer and producer prices for meat and eggs |
01/10/2020 |
While consumer prices for meat and eggs remained at a high level in June and July, the relevant producer prices remained under pressure. The retail prices of poultry meat and pork increased over these months by 1 and 2%, respectively. However, the producer prices declined by 3 and 1%, respectively. Moreover, the retail egg price remained high and the packing station price decreased by 2%. Consumers also hardly paid less for pork in June and July, while the industry’s producer price in July dropped by 18%. The pork meat industry has been struggling with uncertainties and large price fluctuations for quite some time now due to African swine fever, Covid-19, border closures and such.
Consumer prices of other product groups also barely declined. Consumer prices of dairy remained high and the price of bread was stable. Fruit prices increased by less than 1% and vegetable prices dropped by 3%. In July, the retail price of potatoes increased by 5% compared to May, while the farm-gate price actually decreased after a slight recovery in June.
