14/02/2018 |
Compared with the end of 2016, consumer prices for eggs increased by 17% in December 2017. The consumer price indexes for beef and dairy reached a record high in November of 115 and 117 points, respectively (2010=100). Consumer prices for potatoes and vegetables were 4% lower in December than at the end of 2016. The other product groups all saw price increases compared with the end of 2016: bread prices increased by 1%, fresh meat by 4 to 5%, fruit and dairy by 8%. With some delay, shortages on the egg market due to the Fipronil crisis reached the consumers. The producer prices of eggs increased by 45% on average compared with the end of 2016 and the farm-gate price increased by even 76%. From July to December 2017, the farm-gate price index showed an unprecedented increase of more than 100 points to a level of 220 points. These results can be seen in the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The Monitor follows the prices of a number of products at three links in the chain: consumer price (CPI), producer price (PPI) and farm-gate price (API). The PPI represents the prices at which supermarkets buy their produce. This update covers November and December 2017. |
