Consumer price for potatoes persistently high

21/06/2017

At 115 points, the consumer price for potatoes was considerably higher than the 107 points of April 2016 (2010=100), despite a price decrease of more than 2 points in April. The difference is caused by a modest harvest and the good demand for processed potatoes. For poultry meat, the consumer price in April increased relatively substantially by almost 2 points to 113 points, which is 6 points above the level of April 2016. The prices of the two other animal protein sources - milk and pork - increased by 1 point in April, resulting in a level which was 5 and 4 points higher than last year. Bread and beef prices remained stable. Egg prices for consumers decreased in April by almost 1 point, resulting in a level which was about 3 points lower than April last year. In the egg chain, the production price in April was 7 points lower than last year. However, the farm-gate price increased by almost 8 points to more than 25 points above last year's level. This was partly due to Easter being later in the year and a delay in the usual price increases. Last year, the farm-gate prices in April had already declined. Producer prices and farm-gate prices in the dairy chain hardly increased in April, but prices are considerably higher than last year. Producer prices and farm-gate prices in the pork chain were also considerably higher than last year. With an increase of more than 40 points, the price of fattening pigs is the biggest climber among farm-gate prices. These results appear from the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands, which monitors the prices of a number of products on three levels in the chain: consumer price, producer price and farm-gate price. The information is updated monthly and explained on a bi-monthly basis. This update contains an explanation of the figures up to and including April 2017.
